Mugwort's Shadow is the first book in the middle-grade series The Ballad of the Badger King: In a world populated by beasts of every shape and size, enemies and riddles wait at every turn as Yarrow and the Medley Troupe try to help their badger friend reclaim her rightful throne.

Yarrow, the young hedgehog minstrel, has his life figured out. He wants to play his mandolin, sing a few songs, and eat muffins at the fireside. Traveling across the country with his owl friend and the foxling twins, Yarrow seeks the perfect audience for his genius.

But then the troupe encounters a letter from a princess who is imprisoned by the usurper Mugwort and his barbarian army. Now Yarrow's peace - and his life - are endangered.

Can his selfish heart make room for helping those in need?

Fans of The Green Ember, Redwall, and Narnia will be pleased to discover this new adventure series illustrating courage, sacrifice, and hope.

We really enjoyed this book as a family! The characters were complex and growing which I loved! The woodland setting and characters and kingdom were charming at the plot was interesting and engaging. I can’t wait for book 2 to find out what happens to princess Frageria, her friends, the troop and the kingdoms! This book reminded me of The Green Ember and Wingfeather Saga!

We need more!

My not-crazy-about-reading-but-here-for-anything-woodland-animals 12-year-old absolutely devoured this book. It was the first time I’ve ever had to tell him to put down a book and go to bed. He (and I!) anxiously await book 2!
