Journey to Claw Cave is the second book in the middle-grade series The Ballad of the Badger King: In a world populated by beasts of every shape and size, enemies and riddles wait at every turn as Yarrow and the Medley Troupe try to help their badger friend reclaim her rightful throne.
Perseverance. Loyalty. Trust.
Saving the princess was just the beginning.
Yarrow is ready to settle back into the easy life of a hedgehog minstrel. But when Princess Fragaria asks Rye and the Medley Troupe to escort the mysterious bone key to Mel’s parents, he can’t say no. The archeologist owls may be able to read the strange script written on the key and discover why Mugwort wants it so badly.
But as Rye’s critical attitude undermines their new friendship, Yarrow struggles to stay committed to the quest.
Just days away from answers to the riddle of the bone key, a devastating betrayal rips their group apart. Yarrow and Rye find themselves alone at the mercy of Mugwort’s wolves. When given an opportunity to escape, will Yarrow abandon his newfound principles to save himself - or risk everything to save one of the foul beasts who mistreated him?
Perfect for fans of The Green Ember, Redwall, and The Chronicles of Narnia, this second book in The Ballad of the Badger King continues the story of Yarrow, Rye, and the Medley Troupe that began in Mugwort’s Shadow.

Summary: Yarrow the hedgehog minstrel just wants to travel the country, performing as they travel, not get involved in any sort of trouble. Is that too much to ask?
Notes: If you like Green Ember, Redwall, or Narnia, you'll probably like this book. So far, it's not as violent as Green Ember, so totally fine for younger readers. I love all the similes and metaphors in this book. I also like how we can see Yarrow's character growth throughout the book. I have the second book waiting for me to read, and I can't wait to find out what happens to everyone! There's fox twins, Salix and Larix, who are full of mischief and secrets, Mel the burrowing owl, who is usually right, Yarrow who has to learn to think of others, and a badger princess and her prickly hedgehog-in-waiting. What else do you need?
Violence: One animal gets hurt, another time they come across an animal who has died.
Romance: None
Scary themes: A little. There is a bunch of wolves and an evil mole who want to take over a kingdom and are enslaving animals.
Genre: Allegorical...slightly/Fantasy because of the talking animals/Adventure
Our whole family loved this book! We listened to the author read it during a road trip. It was func engaging, and mysterious! We enjoyed learning more about all the characters. Excited for the next installment.
Such a fun and lovely book! Truly a treat to read. Fun characters and a story that draws you in immediately. Great for a family read aloud or what my kiddo did-binge read the whole thing on Christmas break. Highly recommend!
